(1).《礼记》有《奔丧》篇， 孔颖达 疏：“案 郑 《目録》云，名曰《奔丧》者，以其居他国，闻丧奔归之礼。”古代凡闻君、亲、尊长之丧，从外地赶往吊唁或料理丧事均称“奔丧”。《左传·襄公十五年》：“冬， 晋悼公 卒，遂不克会。 郑 公孙夏 如 晋 奔丧。” 汉 班固 《白虎通·丧服》：“诸侯有亲丧，闻天子崩奔丧者何？”《后汉书·桓荣传》：“﹝ 桓荣 ﹞事博士 九江 朱普 ……会 朱普 卒， 荣 奔丧 九江 ，负土成坟。”
(2).多用于亲丧。《明史·刘宗周传》：“母卒于家。 宗周 奔丧，为堊室中门外，日哭泣其中。” 郭沫若 《残春》：“他因为死了父亲，要回去奔丧。”
